Back in the '50s in a
small town in Hawaii, I rode my
Higgins bike everywhere. For a grade school
boy, my
bicycle was my "wheels." That
precarious balancing act, riding
a bike for first time (before crashing into the
fence), is still
remembered as one of life's greatest
accomplishments. This year when
the old house was sold, I found my old bike,
totally rusted and disjointed, like the
remains of a long dead friend. I salvaged a wheel
from the
dumpster that hauled the household junk away,
including the rest of
my Higgins. Although the brittle rubber on
the tire is worn thin to the
metal hub, the tire is a momento of the
days of my youth when
I had freedom to roam further than I was
permitted to.
