STATEMENT

I am a Birmingham-based artist specializing in painting, collage, and digital imagery.

Producing images that flit back and forth between the figurative and the abstract, my central preoccupation is a phenomenological one, exploring the multi-level structures and processes involved in the miraculous emergence of a conceptual and spiritual apprehension of the world from raw, committed perception: the mystery of mind in the world.

As I work I seek a quality of concentrated attention rooted in a state of mental quiet. From here I watch for intuitions from the interior. These intuitions, inherently ambiguous, surface in the language of dimly-lit memories and fugitive insights, of poetry and dreams.

It is my task is to crystalize them as an image.

In so far as I conceive of my work as an attempt to translate intimations of the transcendent into pictorial terms, my art could be said to have a religious, or spiritual basis. Indeed, I feel that these images are best approached in a spirit of contemplation.
